Graduation Diplomas For All

Tassel

A tassel, also known as a liripipe, is the string or cord that is seen hanging on the side of a graduation cap or a mortarboard. There are several materials that can be used in the making of these tassels. The most common material for the making of these items is yarn or thread of around 24″ long which may be folded in half and then wrapped using another length of yarn or thread so that it forms a knot. It is possible to fashion an elaborate
tassel.

The tassels were once used by the military to denote social or military rank in a lot of western cultures.

These days, the tassels are mainly used for decorative purposes or ornamental value. The graduation tassel, as opposed to being a decorative element, is also used by many people to suggest that they have crossed over from being an undergraduate to a graduate. If people are receiving a higher award from a lesser one, the tassels lay on one side and in this case it is the right side, and upon receiving the award or designated degree, the tassels move from the right to the left side. These liripipes may also be worn on the graduate’s shoes.
