Why Dieting May Not Be The Answer

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

Obesity is a real life problem that is spreading fast throughout the Western world but most particularly in the USA. It has given rise to literally 100s of diets and a huge money making industry that has grown up around peoples’ desperate need to shed those pounds. However there is far more to losing weight than a mere diet.

Diets are good for emergency weight loss but they are in effect just a quick fix. Many people go thorough with a weight loss diet and do indeed lose weight and are ecstatic! Then when they return to a normal diet they see those pounds returning and pretty soon they are the same, or worse still, heavier than they were in the beginning. Depressed they give up and resign themselves to being fat.

You can avoid this happening to you with a few simple steps:

Avoid fad diets (ones in fashion) and “lose weight quick diets”
Do not just rely on diet alone combine with other weight loss techniques

Exercise

Mindset

Diets in fashion are just that. They are not usually long lasting and if you lose weight it is often only temporary. When you lose weight quickly your body will be stressed and you have a very good chance of regaining your weight and even adding more pounds. A better way is to adjust your eating habits permanently. This can be done by:

Cutting out so-called junk foods like chips candy and sweets.

Eating smaller portions

Drinking more water

Eating more fiber rich foods-these fill you up and stop you from getting so hungry

Combine with other weight loss techniques: do not just do dieting, for success use other techniques to help you lose weight, like exercise.

Exercise: is one of the best ways to lose weight. You need only do about 20 minutes 3 times a week and you will be losing weight. A brisk walk everyday will help you lose and maintain weight control.

Mindset: Be determined to succeed and you will. Once you decide that you have a problem, (you are fat and need help) and are determined to lose weight you will be able to do it. You just need the willpower and attitude to make the changes in your lifestyle to lose those pounds.

Try to reduce stress (both mentally and physically): mental and physical stress causes your body to react by retaining weight and not allowing you to shed those unwanted pounds. Lack of sleep is a big factor in stressing out your body and one that many of us do. When you deprive yourself of sleep your body reacts to this stress by retaining fat and not enabling you to lose weight. Mental stress is a big factor in weight loss. When you are stressed or even depressed there is a tendency to eat more to relieve emotions. Plus your body views this frame of mind as a stress factor and again inhibits weight loss.

Next time you decide to get rid of those unwanted pounds do not just rely on diet. Change your habits and try to put all these simple techniques to work and you will lose more weight than you expected. When you lose weight you will look better feel better and be able to live a healthier more satisfying life.

Oats Helps Healthy Weight Maintenance

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

The world today is facing an alarming health problem with obesity. Overweight among people is result of bad dietary habits, lack of exercise and a sedentary life-style. The main cause though is poor diet. Keeping a low fat, high fibre diet is one way of countering weight problems. Oats is an excellent organic food that helps maintain a healthy weight and is essential in a long-term health diet. More and more people are becoming health conscious and turning to meatless, low cholesterol foods, which has led to the recognition of oats a natural food in the fight against obesity.

By consuming Oats and its ingredient Beta-glucan a person can maintain a healthy weight.

• B-glucan present in Oats delays the stomach from emptying contributing to a longer feeling of being full.

• The high fibre in Oats help you feel fuller longer but without providing any calories.

• The presence of B-glucan in the small intestine slows down the nutrient absorption process leading to a longer feeling of satiety.

• Oats assists weight maintenance and reduction by increasing the amount of fat discharged in the faeces.

• When consumed with other organic foods the effects of Oats B-glucan are even stronger.

Velle oats website is in Russian language so people who know Russian can understand the goodness of oats and its impact on health.

I will recommend all the readers to visit the website to read further articles.

Whole Grains? How Can You Tell What You’re Buying?

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

When the label says “Stone Ground Wheat Bread”, does that mean it’s healthy? How can you tell if a food is made from whole grains or refined grains?

It’s not always easy, but here are a few tips. Remember that the germ of a grain seed will go rancid very quickly after the seed is broken open unless it is cooked immediately. Most whole-grain breakfast cereals and “quick cooking” whole grain products (such as bulgur or instant brown rice) are steamed, toasted or otherwise cooked as soon as the seed is broken, so there is no need to remove the germ. These products usually contain the whole grain.

On the other hand, commercial products made from flour frequently have the germ and some or most of the fiber removed, so the flour can be stored without turning rancid. Manufacturers may mix some toasted wheat germ or fiber back in, but they don’t have to explain that on the label. Our US labeling laws say a product can be called “whole grain” if it contains 50 percent of the original grain components (including the germ and outer bran layers.) Healthy-sounding terms such as multi-grain, cracked wheat, rye, or stone-ground do not mean you’re getting 100 percent of the grain. I only trust “whole wheat” bread bought from local bakers who grind their own wheat and bake it the same day.

Almost all corn products have the germ and fiber removed: grits, hominy, tortillas, corn meal, corn flour (masa harina) and breakfast cereals made from milled corn are all refined grains. Most rice products such as cereals, rice cakes and rice crackers are made from white rice unless they specify brown rice as the first ingredient.

When you shop for a new cereal or grain product such as whole wheat pasta, read the labels. Look for at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. More fiber is better! A 50-gram serving of wheat berries has 8 grams of fiber, so use that as your yardstick to guess whether the manufacturer has removed parts of the grain. Eat a wide variety of whole grains and whole grain products and get the nutritional benefits of them all.

The Liquid Vitamin Mineral Supplement

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

The liquid vitamin mineral supplement is a must have for maximum vitality and health. In today’s fast food environment most of us do not get the proper balance of food for the necessary for optimal health Unfortunately the body only absorbs 10 to 20 percent of the nutrients found in traditional pills and capsules. Thus the case for the liquid vitamin mineral supplement.

That 10-20% goes even lower as we age (especially we seniors darn it - :-)) as we have a heck of a lot less stomach acid required to break down these pills and capsules.

Some simple research also reveals a deficiency in nutrients can cause us suffering and may even shorten our lives. Can you even begin to imagine what this maybe doing to our children and grandchildren as their bodies and minds are trying to develop? Crazy behavior, inattentiveness, bad grades, ancy-pants, hyper? Humm…?

After snooping around a little we also learned that four to five crop rotations were planted each year on a single plot of land, intense farming practices have depleted vital nutrients from the soil. 99% of us are deficient in minerals…The alarming fact is that foods, fruits, vegetables, and grains now being raised on millions of acres of land no longer contain enough certain needed minerals and are starving us, no matter how much of them we eat.

Take a peek at the U.S. Senate Document 264 and the 1992 Earth Summit Report support these findings and suggest that 99 percent of Americans are mineral deficient.

Malnutrition comes in the form of “too much” rather than too little - too much saturated fat, too many hydrogenated fats, too much sodium, too much refined sugar, too many calories. These food excesses result in an added burden to the body and do not supply adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals. Over 90% of U.S. adults are still deficient in at least one vitamin or mineral. We are an overfed and undernourished nation.

We have a serious malnutrition problem here in the USA but its not for the lack of food. Thus the obvious need for the liquid vitamin mineral supplement.

Healthy Eating Myths Destroyed

Posted by admin in Nutrition Management

Some of the things you think you know that just ain’t so (these myths are not true):

Eating Cholesterol does not increase your cholesterol levels
Salt does NOT cause High Blood Pressure
Eating Fat does NOT make you fat
All refined carbohydrates are hazardous to you
Artificial sweeteners of all kinds are not good for you
All vitamins and supplements are NOT created equal

Eating Cholesterol does not increase your cholesterol levels

The Medical professions current way of thinking about cholesterol.
They look and see lots of cholesterol in the blood. So they scratch their head and say, well, don’t eat so much cholesterol then. If you eat less cholesterol, you will not have as much in your blood. Now, on the surface, it sounds good. But there are two major flaws with their theory. The first one. It doesn’t work. I dare you to try and find someone whose cholesterol significantly went down by eating less cholesterol. You will be hard pressed to find someone. Even with medication.

That brings in my favorite definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. This is what the medical profession has been doing for Years. Telling people to do the same thing, with out really getting results, expecting to get different results. It just doesn’t work that way.

The Second flaw in their theory is this. The cholesterol in your blood is not the same cholesterol in the food you eat. Your body actually has to break down the cholesterol in the food you eat, and then absorb the pieces of the cholesterol. Then your body, if it wants to, has to reassemble the pieces back into the cholesterol you find in your blood. And your body does not make cholesterol, unless you need it.

The question is then why would you need cholesterol in your blood?

Cholesterol’s primary job is to carry glucose (sugar) around the blood stream. You need an equal number of cholesterol units as you have sugar molecules in your blood. So if you have 3000 sugar molecules in your blood, you need 3,000 cholesterol molecules to carry them. The actual numbers are much, much higher than this, but you get the point.

The more glucose or sugar molecules you have in your blood, the more cholesterol you need to carry them.

So what affects your blood sugar levels? Mostly what you eat. Refined Carbohydrates. When you eat refined carbohydrates, the get digested and absorbed into the blood stream very quickly. Your body then very quickly converts the refined carbohydrates into glucose. This causes a spike in your blood glucose levels. And if you have a high amount of glucose in the blood, what do you need again? That is right; you need lots of cholesterol to carry those glucose guys around.

Your body is smart. It learns from the past. If you are constantly having high amounts of glucose because of the food you eat. Your body prepares for the next time that you eat refined carbohydrates. It prepares by having lots of cholesterol on reserves to deal with the certain increase in glucose levels that are inevitably going to happen.

So if you eat refined carbohydrates often (daily) your body prepares by keeping lots of cholesterol on reserve to deal with this. This is one of the biggest reasons why so many people have high cholesterol levels. Your body is smart, and it is preparing for the inevitability of your blood glucose levels going way up from eating refined carbohydrates.

Like I said, your body is smart. It is a very quick learner. If you quit eating food that makes your blood sugar levels high, your body will get rid of the excess of cholesterol levels in your blood. That is why, often with in weeks, your cholesterol levels drop significantly, often 50 or 100 or more points, when you quit eating refined carbohydrates.

Now, the trick comes with, what is “refined carbohydrates”. Refined carbohydrates are things that are mostly calories from carbohydrates that have been refined from how they are found in nature including most sugars. Great, what does that mean? Things like breads, crackers, pastas, sugar (in most forms), and grains are refined carbohydrates.

To safely, significantly lower your cholesterol level with in weeks, quit eating refined carbohydrates. It is that simple. And again, don’t take my word for it. Do it yourself, and measure your cholesterol levels before and after, and you will see for yourself. If you cut refined carbohydrates out completely, you will often notice the 50-100 point drops within weeks. If you still eat refined carbohydrates, you will notice a decrease, but not as quickly. And the amount your cholesterol drops will be in direct proportion to how much refined carbohydrates you quit eating. The less you eat, the more it will drop. It really is that simple.
