Mexican Copper Bathtubs or Soaking In Style

Posted by admin in School of Home Improvement

For thousands of years copper has been present in the development of the major civilizations of the world. Even now copper is one of the most used metals in a great number of areas of our contemporary life.

The common uses of copper are wide and various, they go from the pipes in our kitchens and bathrooms to the wiring of the electric web across our cities and the country. There is also a significant presence of copper in all the electronic gadgets we use every day, from the coffee maker to the PC on our desk.

But these are not the only places, not the only forms copper can be present in our lives. For many centuries, artisans of a small town in Mexico’s western mountains have made a living of making beautiful pieces of art from raw pieces of copper. These art pieces can take many forms; jars, flower pots, plates, sinks and yes; also beautiful handmade copper bathtubs.

These bathtubs are made entirely from a few raw copper plates which are previously softened with heat from a wood fire and then, once the proper softness has been reached, they are welded one onto each other to be then hammered until the desired copper tub shape is attained.

The manufacturing of each of these tubs is an sculpting task for the artisans. They usually work in teams and by using their hammers and chisels they patiently shape the copper plates, inch by inch, into the desired form of a bathtub. Once the shape has been attained then they proceed to heat the entire copper tub and then “patina” (clear or dark) is applied to the surface of the bathtub in order to protect it from water and the elements, making the lifetime of one of these tubs that of many years.

At the end the result of all this patient and careful work of the Mexican artisans is one of the most beautiful and stylish furniture you can add to your bathroom. A copper sculpture made for soaking, one piece of art waiting for you to take a comfortable bath in it.

Bean Bag Chairs Compared to Regular Furniture

Posted by admin in School of Home Improvement

Bean bag chairs still remain one of the worlds many mysteries. How did they come about, who or what inspired the shape, are they safe, and where can I get one? To answer these questions and more we need to look into the 1960’s when this design was first uncovered. Created by an Italian design and first called a “Sacco”, the bean bag chairs became greatly popular and then mass-produced. Today this design is still remains basically the same with exception to the fabric, filling, the original headrest and additional safety features.

Bean bag chairs are the only furniture other than plastic patio chairs that can be easily relocated. This makes them ideal for flats, the poolside and any other outdoor area. (Check the waterproof qualities on the tag.) Also ideal for use on new carpet or floor lining as these clever designs won’t leave a dent in your floor. Bean bag chairs can be found in every color of the rainbow with so many designs and colors to choose from including pet beanbag beds, leather, denim, fur and suede fabrics. There is a design and color to suit any home with the exception being a too classic home may not necessarily suit a bean bag, try the den or playroom instead. There are also bean bags fabrics that are waterproof and can repel liquids that may them ideal for pets or little children. One of the fun things about having a bean bag chairs is deciding where to put it.

These wonderful creations are also great at saving you money. Why spend thousands on a new lounge suite when you can buy modern, furniture set in the few hundreds. Bean bag chairs can be found filled already or with just the case so they will need to be filled. If this is the case then you will need a helper. They can hold the bag open while you pull the polystyrene balls in. Stand away from a door as even the slightest of breeze can cause a small snowstorm in your lounge. Make sure to stuff the bag incredibly full if you suffer from a bad back or sore neck. To check that the bag is filled enough, check that there are still 6 inches between the widest point of the bean bags. If you prefer a loose comfortable fit only fill the bag of the way for a fuller fit try filling it as close to the top as you can while making sure it can still close.

Decorate a room with bean bags, they are affordable, bright, welcoming, cosy and fashionable. All your friends will be over to enjoy trying out your new bean bags. To get the perfect shape from your new bean bag chairs there are a few ways to go about this. Sit in the middle of the bag, not too high or too low. The bag will provide a supported yet comfortable seat. Make a bean bags the main feature of the room if you are going for a modern look. Brighten up any dull room with a colored beanbag. Ideal as gifts for students leaving for uni, they can fit into any space are lightweight and easy to move. They can blend in tastefully with any room if the right color and fabric have been selected. When it comes to bean bag chairs and children, there are a few safety issues to be considered here. While beanbags are safe they pose a risk if loose beads escape from the bean bags. Try to find a bean bag chairs supplier that will line you bean bags when they make it with a safety liner. This ensures that the beans will be extra secure in the beanbag.

7 Tips to Care for Your Antique Furniture

Posted by admin in School of Home Improvement

During your spring cleaning, don’t forget to think about your
antiques. In this month’s column, we’ll give you seven tips to help
you care for your antique furniture.

1. Use paste wax

Every couple of months, wax with a good quality
paste wax that can be found in any hardware
store. If you wax too much, it can dull the finish
and attract dust. To remove a waxy build up,
apply varesol with a clean cotton cloth. Proper
waxing will bring up the color and grain of the
wood and protect it. Rub a small amount on a
soft cloth and apply it in circular motions. Let it
dry then buff with a clean cloth.

2. Don’t use aerosol sprays

Avoid aerosol spray polishes because they can
contain silicone oil and other agents that can be
harmful to your furniture. For daily cleaning, use a
clean cloth or a clean duster. For those who like
to use something more, I recommend Orange Oil
because it works well to clean and polish wood
finishes. I like it because it doesn’t leave a wax
build up and doesn’t contain linseed or silicone oil.

3. Use coasters

A great deal of surface damage can be prevented
if you always remember to use coasters, mats and
trivets and avoid placing hot and/or wet items
directly on furniture.

4. Avoid scratching furniture

Never slide anything (vase, plate, serving dish etc)
across a surface because it will scratch. A very
light scratch can be treated with Restore-AFinish,
a great multi-purpose product. Deep
scratches require the skill of professional restorers.

5. Clean liquid spills

Spilled water should be thoroughly wiped up
immediately. Alcohol and solvents (nail polish, nail
polish remover, perfumes) should be dabbed, not
wiped because they can act like a furniture stripper
and damage the finish. White rings left from
either a hot drink or a wet glass should be
attended to right away. A little Brasso applied
with a clean cloth may do the trick. Or, I have
found that Restor-A-Finish works well to remove
white rings. Always test on a small area first.
Remove candle wax - Wait for the wax to cool
then gently loosen using a fingernail to remove.

6. Draw the drapes

Just as sun damage to the skin is cumulative and
permanent, its effects on wood are just as
destructive. Diffused sunlight over a long period
of time can be as detrimental as direct sunlight
over a short period of time. Sunlight can turn a
clear finish yellow. The only good news about sun damage is that
it’s easy to avoid. Draw the drapes, pull the
blinds or have an UV-filtering film applied to
your windows.

7. Don’t ignore relative humidity

Central heating is the worst thing to happen to
antiques. A warm inside and cold outside makes
life comfortable while wreaking havoc on
antiques. It’s the fluctuations in relative humidity
that central heating creates which cause the
problem. Wood responds to relative humidity by
expanding and contracting as it tries to maintain
a balance with its environment. It’s not the rapid
changes during the course of a day that cause
the most damage. It’s the long-term seasonal
fluctuations, which cause the serious damage.

During the dry winter months when it is cold
outside and warm inside, wood tends to shrink.
During hot damp summers when it is warm outside
and cooler inside, wood tends to expand.
Long-term exposure to these conditions leads to
cracking, warping and splitting.

To guard against the fluctuations in relative
humidity in your home, use a humidifier during
the cold winter and a dehumidifier in the damp
summer. Think twice before putting a good piece
of furniture in a basement, attic, near heating
vents or near fireplaces. Keep fresh air circulating.
Maintain a constant room temperature and turn
it low at night.

How to use accessories in a bedroom decorating project?

Posted by admin in School of Home Improvement

Any interior space is primarily composed of walls, floor and
ceiling. These elements give a habitable character to the
interior space.

Apart from providing protection from natural elements such as
rain, snow, wind and other natural calamities, an interior space
is also responsible for creating moods, depending upon the theme
of the decoration.

Depending upon the functional purpose of the interior space, the
quality and quantity of the furniture and other elements may
change. For example a “meditation center” might not require any
furniture at all, but a gymnasium on the other hand requires
specially designed equipment.

For the sake of this article we are only going to concentrate on
bedrooms. A bedroom is a space, which is close to our heart.
This is the space where we take rest and regain the vital energy
force for the next day’s work. A typical bedroom consists of a
double/single bed depending upon the size and occupancy of the
room, wardrobe, study table, chairs for informal gathering,
dressing table, side tables adjacent to the bed for keeping
items such as telephone, watch, etc..

Since a bulk of volume gets occupied with the furniture pieces,
the beauty of a bedroom greatly depends upon the quality of the
furniture. But that’s not all. Any interior space can be greatly
enhanced using “accessories” and some great amount of detailing
can be added to an existing bedroom with furniture.

1)Use of decorative curtains.

These are called as “valances” are a very good means to decorate
the windows and other openings. These decorative curtains have 2
purposes. a) They define a window opening b) They diffuse the
incoming sunlight and help the dispersion of light evenly.
Valances can be easily be prepared at home with some basic
knowledge of stitching.

2)Wall Hangings Wall hangings are used as an alternative for
wall paintings. These have a great advantage that they can be
prepared from almost any material. Some possible options for
material use could be matt finished paper, handmade paper, silk
cloth, bamboo sticks, jeans cloth!, wool, plastic sheets, crape
papers, etc… Small square pieces of these materials along with
bits of mirrors pieces can be creatively used to prepare a wall
hanging.

3)Wall Paintings.

The choice of the painting in this case highly depends upon the
likes/dislikes of the user. Also the nature of the surface on
which the painting is going to be, is also important.

4)Photographs

Most people like to use framed photographs of the family
members, ancestors, or some live stills from outside world. This
method has got a great advantage. The user has got perfect
control over which kind of photos to choose. Photographs of real
people can greatly add a human touch to an interior space.

5)Statues

These greatly add to the quality of the space. In case of
bedrooms the statues which can add some interest to the overall
theme can be used. Some gift articles come in the form of
statues or a watch embedded in it can serve two purposes at a
time. They add some grace to the design and at the same time,
become a useful functional piece.

6)Shade Loving Plants.

Depending upon the size of the bedroom, lots of varieties of
shade loving plants are available today. If the plant is a
flowering one, then this can be very creatively used. A
flowering plant can greatly add to the mood of an space because
of its changing nature of foliage and color.

7)Decorative Lamp Shades.

Decorative lamp shades have a very unique quality attached to
them. Because they are functional mostly at night times, the
shape of the lamp shade itself can be chosen in such a way, that
will add some interest in the bedroom. During its functional
times a lampshade which is made of semitransparent cloth covers
can add some wonderful ambience in the interior space.

8)Free standing wooden partitions.

These are used in large bedroom to define certain areas of the
same space into different parts. for example a wooden partition
can be used to segregate a study space inside a bedroom or a
decorative wooden partition can be used to hide the direct entry
to the toilet, by creating a private area.

These are some of the ideas I have come up with randomly. These
can be a good starting point. You can always come up with more
good and creative ideas of your own. A very creative use of
these accessories can definitely cheer up an interior space

I hope this article was informative to everyone.
