I feel very disappointed due to high expectation from this brands. Eurostar Agrees to Negotiate with Workers over Loneworking Issue


Eurostar is facing strong opposition from its workers over the proposed loneworking system for train managers. RMT members of Eurostar have unanimously decided to undertake indefinite industrial action against their employer until the issue is resolved.

As RMT General Secretary Bob Crow commented, there were quite a few times in December 2009 when hazardous situations on board Eurostar were prevented by the timely intervention of the train managers. He said that this was proof enough not to give the go-ahead to the implementation of loneworking policies.

As part of the action, staff did not collect upgrade charges from travellers on board from 00:01 hours to 23:59 hours on Monday 10 May 2010. They also did not operate any train that was not fully staffed with two qualified train managers, starting from 00:01 hours on the same day. The second industrial action will continue until both parties reach an agreement.

According to a spokeswoman from Eurostar, the company plans to operate as usual. She told the Morning Star that the company will keep the trains fully staffed with two managers to ensure that they run smoothly. It would be only in unavoidable circumstances that the trains will have only one manager. She also expressed the willingness of the company to negotiate on the matter.
